ARPANET: The Grandparent of the Internet

The specific project that really got things rolling was called ARPANET. It was funded by the U.S. Department of Defense’s Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA). In the late 1960s, a few university and research institutions were connected. Think of it as a very exclusive club, not the worldwide party we have today. The very first message sent over ARPANET was from UCLA to the Stanford Research Institute in 1969. The message was supposed to be “LOGIN,” but only the “L” and “O” made it before the system crashed! A humble, yet historic, beginning.

What did ARPANET teach us?

  • Packet Switching: Information wasn’t sent as one continuous stream, but broken into small “packets” that could take different routes and be reassembled at the destination. This made the network incredibly resilient.
  • Decentralization: No central hub meant no single point of failure. If one node went down, the information could still find another path.
  • Interoperability: Different types of computers and networks could “talk” to each other, a concept that became crucial for the internet’s growth.

From Academic Curiosity to Global Commerce

For years, the internet (or rather, its predecessors) remained largely within academic and research circles. Scientists and engineers used it to share data and collaborate across distances. It was a powerful tool, but not something the general public even knew about.

Then came the 1990s. The World Wide Web emerged, making information much easier to access and navigate with browsers. Suddenly, the internet wasn’t just for super-smart researchers; it was for everyone. Businesses quickly saw the potential.
